Things I learned today while actually being productive.

Freytag's pyramid in 7 parts
1. How to analyze dramatic structure using the elements of Freytag’s pyramid, which I once knew and forgot in my pathetic attempt at living a normal life. If you’re curious (and of course you are), the elements are Exposition, Inciting Action/Moment, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution and Denouement. Some sources say there are five elements, some say seven (which is what I was taught), but either way the structure is used to break the plot of a novel/play into parts so the reader can understand what happens, why, and what the author intended the reader to understand and when. Generally it only applies to classic literature and plays because no one follows the rules anymore. And that’s why reading is awesome.
2. Should I ever be in the awkward (and highly unlikely) position of requesting an interview with a source who is reluctant or hostile, there are steps I can take to seduce them with my wily interviewer ways, as well as measures for combating resistance. Um, I never want to interview anyone ever. This article gets bonus points for using the phrase “cocky peacock” in a completely relevant and non-disgusting context that I was almost mature enough to not giggle at.
3. If you’re going to try to kill the global superstar that is the Leader of the Free World, get a better plan than “let’s get really close and try to stab him with this knife.” You will fail. See “Plot to Assassinate Obama Foiled in Turkey,” which sounds like a really unfunny recipe for a racist Thanksgiving (in a trailer).

I fell in love with Gregory Peck when I was five. Is that weird??
4. If you purchase a paperback copy of To Kill a Mockingbird from Amazon.com, they will recommend the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows audiobook on your home page the next time you log in. Based on what? Well, your interest in classic American literature on paper, of course. What.
5. McSweeney’s will always hold a very special and revered place in my life, even though I was sort of ticked off at them for a little while. I’ve decided that whatever Dave Eggers wants to do, he can do with my full and sincere approval. Also, I guess that goes for the other editors there, even though I have no idea who they are.
6. I need more sleep, more often. Happy Tuesday; I’m off to bed now.
